Background
Nick Wakeman is inspired by the assured and classic style of the sartorial European man's wardrobe. Studio Nicholson seizes that man's sense of dress and creates an effortless, confident and unadorned wardrobe for women who require a practical yet classy uniform.
"I have always coveted men's tailoring," says Nick, "in fact menswear in general. I wear a lot of men's shirts and jackets and if I could fit men's suits and trousers they would feature in my wardrobe too. The detailing in menswear is so much more considered, from the simplicity of the fabric being allowed to do the talking to the taping on internals - as a rule I have a much stronger response to menswear than womenswear."
Nick has applied these same menswear design ethics to the Studio Nicholson collection - where we find a straightforward boyish cut intensely developed in fit for women without losing any of its menswear roots. Necklines fall to reveal more, armholes are dropped to give a more modern silhouette and trousers are kept sleek, but not skinny and are often rounded with a nod to Japanese denim.
Studio Nicholson's brand personality is one of understated androgynous luxury. "Make is enormously important to me" - states Nick- "Character fabrics are selected where texture is an essential aspect to an otherwise unadorned collection. Seams are bound or taped and trims are meticulously chosen for their authenticity to each garment."
Inspiration
For Autumn Winter 2011 Studio Nicholson's collection is once again a carefully considered range of shirts, blouses, jackets, trousers and old school jumpers in luxe cashmere. The palette is subtle and feels honest and natural with navy, feminine khakis, softest greys, a bolt of chambray blue, warm creams and textured blacks.
